Great News
The last Syrian troops have pulled out of Lebanon, ending an extra long occupation.
I loathe nearly everything about the lead-up to our invasion of Iraq (so dishonest and radical) and I loathe the way the war was handled after we got in (too squishy, too unrealistically) but I don't see how you can say it hasn't been worth it when things like this occur.

Hi!
I've been reading your blog after seeing the link on the DU homepage. I've really been enjoying it so far, but I wanted to make a point about this particular post.
I too, am glad that the Syrian troops are leaving Lebanon. Occupation is rarely a good thing, and Lebanon is better off when they are able to control their own country. However, I give the Bush administration absolutely no credit for this happening. Tension between Lebanon and Syria has been building for years, fueled by the frustrations of occupation, and was bound to explode eventually. The assasination of Rafik Hariri was the spark, and Lebanon had finally had enough. The incredible power of the Lebanese people, of real grassroots democracy, brought the Syrians to their knees. To give the Bush administration and their disasterous quagmire in Iraq credit for the Lebanese people's actions seems misdirected. Iraq is not spawning democracy, it is spiraling downward, and spreading unrest and anti-Americanism throughout the region.
So, in short, I don't believe the Iraq war has accomplished anything. The Lebanese people however, have.
Again, I'm really enjoying your blog, keep up the good work!
